Shibori (Pole Wrapping)

Technique:  Shibori (Pole Wrapping)

Materials: Cotton broadcloth and cotton twine
Spacing/Size: Cloth: 10” x 36” before washing; Spacing: approx. 1/8-1/4”
Folding Methods: Creating tension with wrapped thread to compress fabric into folds around the pole
Anchoring methods: Wrapped cotton twine around fabric and pole

• Pole used is 4.5” diameter with rectangle of cloth wrapped diagonally around the pole
• Scrunch fabric by pushing rows of thread tightly together
• Dye: 1 part sodium alginate and 1 part 3% MX Navy Stock Solution
• Painted on with a foam brush
 
Advantages: 
• Makes small repetitive folds in a time efficient way
 
Disadvantages:
• The compressed folds can’t be easily exact in measurement due to winding method of the twine
 
Ideas for Exploration:
• Using twine of varying material, such as nylon, to cut down on bleeding of dye
