Shibori (1.5” Whip-stitched/Large)
Technique: Shibori (1.5” Whip-stitched/Large)
Space between stitches: 1.5”
Stitch length: approx. 0.5”
Thread: Nylon size 69 (single)
Dye: 1 part sodium alginate 1 part 3% SS MX dye
Steps followed:
- Mark sample at 1.5” intervals down one side
- Use a length of thread approximately 3-4” longer than the width of the sample secure one end with a quilters knot
- Stitch row of whip stitches (looser than previous sample) beginning at mark and leaving the length of thread untrimmed and untied
- Continue with each parallel row
- Each thread is drawn up from the untied end and tightly knotted
- Cloth is painted with thickend dye applied liberally with a foam brush and batched for about 1 hour
- Cloth is washed and thread is pulled out
