Shibori (Board Clamped – Square Fold)

Technique:  Shibori (Board Clamped – Square Fold)
Materials: Cotton broadcloth, two squares of wood and C - clamp
Spacing/Size: Wooden blocks: 2.5” x 2.5” x 0.5”; Cloth: 10” x 36”
Folding Methods: Hand-folded into squares
Anchoring methods: Secured with clamp between wooden blocks
Notes and Reflections: Advantages, Disadvantages, Ideas, Evaluations
• Dye: 2 tbsp. MX Navy and 3% stock solution per 1 qt. of water

Advantages:
• Requires very little setup and cleanup

Disadvantages:
• Takes a large volume of dye bath to completely cover the blocks and clamps for an even dye of the fabric

Ideas for Exploration:
• Would make for a great teaching method since the dye pattern clearly indicates the memory of the fold (alternate non toxic fabric dye in place of this dye)
• Because of commonality of folding pattern could be easily used with other folding modalities and materials (plastic, paper, fiber)
