Seamless Tucks (Cluster)

Technique: Seamless Tucks (Cluster)
Materials: Cotton broadcloth
Spacing/Size: 2” between clusters and 1” between gathers
Folding Methods: Gathering by way of thread tension
Anchoring methods: Hand stitched clusters gather the cloth
Notes and Reflections: Advantages, Disadvantages, Ideas, Evaluations
• Cluster stitch is done from the back of the fabric so that it appears seamless from the front
• This example uses a slightly darker thread so that the stitching does show
• Broadcloth doesn’t hold its shape very well, so making the clusters closer together would be more effective

Advantages:
• A very simple hand stitch that could be used on a variety of weave structures

Disadvantages:
• Requires strong thread because of all the tension used
• Breakage is a concern

Ideas for Exploration:
• More folds in the clusters would make fuller tucks
• This technique could be used for stitched Shibori
• Using shear fabric would showcase the stitch technique
