Pattern Tucks (Running, Overcast and Ladder-stitch)

Technique: Pattern Tucks (Running, Overcast and Ladder-stitch)
“hand-stitched pin tucking that dimensionalizes designs with curving and angular as well as straight lines. Amid the ridges of the pin tucking, pattern-tucked fabric shifts between smooth and puckery.” (Wolff, pg. 183)
Materials: Cotton broadcloth
Spacing/Size: Varies – approx. 1/8” stitch length with 1/8” spacing
Folding Methods: The line of stitches folds the fabric along any line
Anchoring methods: Hand-done stitching secures fold
Notes and Reflections: Advantages, Disadvantages, Ideas, Evaluations
• Pattern is drawn on fabric and hand-stitched to make a small fold

Advantages:
• Can be done to create a tightly curved pattern that would be very difficult to do on a sewing machine
• The overcast stitch creates a rope-like texture that imitates couching
• A good method for very delicate fabrics that you wouldn’t be able to stitch on the sewing machine

Disadvantages:
• Time consuming
• Harder to make even due to hand-stitching
• Although it’s easier to control the curvilinear pattern, it’s still fairly difficult to achieve

Ideas for Exploration:
• Could preprint the pattern on fabric to do a large scale version
