Opposite Edge Gathering (Uncinched-Machine)

Technique: Opposite Edge Gathering (Uncinched-Machine)

Materials: Cotton muslin, cotton sewing thread
Spacing/Size: n/a
Gathering Methods: Two parallel rows of machine stitching pulled to gather (longest stitch length) on opposite ends of fabric; Only pull bobbin thread
Anchoring methods: The bobbin and top thread are tied in a knot on top and bottom of one side; Tied on other side once the fabric has been gathered
Notes and Reflections: Advantages, Disadvantages, Ideas, Evaluations
• Sample plays with uneven gathers
• Gathers are very small because the thread has not been pulled as tightly as in previous samples
• Fabric strip naturally starts to ruffle

Advantages:
• Easily makes the edge of a fabric into many tiny folds

Disadvantages:
• Requires patience to not break the thread used to gather
• Needs a stronger thread like poly or nylon
• Must leave long tails to tie off ends

Ideas for Exploration:
• Try this one with hand stitching
• Could be an insert in another fabric seam
