Gathering (Sewn Layers)

Gathering (Sewn Layers)

Materials: Cotton muslin, cotton sewing thread
Spacing/Size: n/a
Gathering Methods: One row of machine stitching pulled to gather (longest stitch length); Only pull bobbin thread
Anchoring methods: The bobbin and top thread are tied in a knot on one side; Tied on other side once the fabric has been gathered
Notes and Reflections: Advantages, Disadvantages, Ideas, Evaluations
• Sample uses two pieces of equally cut fabric to create a layer of ruffles
• Fabric strip naturally starts to ruffle and take on a more circular shape

Advantages:
• Easily makes the edge of a fabric into many tiny folds
• Two layers was still fairly easy to pull

Disadvantages:
• Requires patience to not break the thread used to gather
• Needs a stronger thread like poly or nylon
• Must leave long tails to tie off ends

Ideas for Exploration:
• Could experiment with stitch length and direction
• Use more layers
• Use longer strip of fabric
• Pull stitches tighter with stronger thread
• Finish edges off
• Could make into organic pattern (floral)
