Opposite Edge Gathering (Cinched Machine)

Technique: Opposite Edge Gathering (Cinched-Machine)

Materials: Cotton muslin, cotton sewing thread
Spacing/Size: n/a
Gathering Methods: One row of machine stitching pulled to gather (longest stitch length) on either edge of fabric strip; Only pull bobbin thread
Anchoring methods: The bobbin and top thread are tied in a knot on one side; Tied on other side once the fabric has been gathered
Notes and Reflections: Advantages, Disadvantages, Ideas, Evaluations
• Sample plays with cinching the gathers tightly on opposite ends
• Gathers come together to create a voluminous shape

Advantages:
• Easily makes the edge of a fabric into many tiny folds
• Lightweight fabric like muslin forms in to this shape with ease

Disadvantages:
• Requires patience to not break the thread used to gather
• Needs a stronger thread like poly or nylon
• Must leave long tails to tie off ends
• This piece does have an opening where the two other sides of the fabric start to meet making it difficult to do anything, like finish off those edges

Ideas for Exploration:
• Gathered edges could be turned under once pulled to conceal raw edges
• Could make many of these in various sizes
