Broomstick Pleat

Technique: Broomstick Pleat
“Damp fabric gathered up, rolled around a cylinder, and bound to hold until dry. When unwrapped, the wrinkled folds are one-directional.” (Wolff, p.115)
Materials: Cotton broadcloth
Spacing/Size: Irregular
Folding Methods:
  • Wrapping around broomstick handle
  • Bind with damps fabric strips
  • Dry and release from pole
Anchoring methods: Gather cloth by binding it with damp strips around the pole
Notes and Reflections: Advantages, Disadvantages, Ideas, Evaluations
• Broomstick left a stain on sample – for future reference, use plastic piping/pole instead for cleaner results

Advantages:
• Does not require a lot of precision/measurement

Disadvantages:
• Fold size and outcome cannot be completely controlled due to the organic nature of the technique
• Requires 1-2 days to fully dry

Ideas for Exploration:
• The Art of Manipulating Fabric by Wolff (pg. 115) mentions alternate binding materials such as nylon stocking
• If material is thicker it could mildew during the long drying time – could speed up dry time with blow dryer
