Box Pleat

Technique: Box Pleat

Materials: Cotton  (unbleached) muslin, unwashed
Spacing/Size: 2”
Folding Methods: Pleats measured, marked, snipped at either end of fabric; Folded length of fabric; Pressed
Anchoring methods: Pressing, no stitch or tacks
Notes and Reflections: Advantages, Disadvantages, Ideas, Evaluations
• Creates repetition and sequence
• Fabric is left with a front and back – folds opposite one another

Advantages:
• Can be standardized and easily translated by pattern for interpretation by others

Disadvantages:
• Time consuming to measure and line up each snip accurately

Ideas for Exploration:
• What if fabric was folded then printed, unfolded, would create interesting stripe patterns
• Folded and printed again, creating layers of printing
• Could be a method to remember the folds, like Shibori, without the folds actually existing on finished product
